Samsung Galaxy model archive · 2020
Galaxy Z Flip gave Samsung’s foldable range a different purpose: make a full-size phone fold down into a compact shape. It is a different idea from opening a Fold into a larger workspace.
Generation at a glance
- 6.7-inch folding main display
- Samsung Ultra Thin Glass
- Flex mode for partially folded use
- Small cover display for quick information
Compact storage rather than a tablet-sized workspace
A clamshell’s main benefit begins when you close it. The phone takes up a different shape in a pocket or bag, while the hinge can also support hands-free photography on a suitable surface. That does not mean every activity is better on a folding screen. Think about how often you would open it, whether the cover display gives enough information and whether the format solves a real carrying or filming problem for you.
Which version is which?
The original Z Flip was unveiled in February 2020. A separate Z Flip 5G followed later that year; check the full model before assuming 5G support. There was no consumer model called Z Flip2 between this generation and Z Flip3. Similar model numbers in used listings should be checked against the phone’s own information.
Looking at one today
Open and close it normally and inspect the hinge and inner display without pressing hard or removing layers. Test the small cover screen, cameras, calls and charging. Ask about screen repairs and battery condition. A foldable has more to inspect than an ordinary phone, and the cost of an inner-screen repair can outweigh an apparently attractive second-hand asking price.
Before choosing an older phone, check the exact model on Samsung’s current security-update list and confirm local network compatibility.
