IPHONE MODEL ARCHIVE · 2013
The 2013 iPhone launch split into two distinct personalities. The 5s advanced the technology inside a familiar compact shape; the 5c made materials and colour part of the choice.

The generation at a glance
The iPhone 5s introduced the 64-bit A7 chip and Touch ID fingerprint authentication. Its 8 MP camera used a True Tone flash. The iPhone 5c paired the A6 chip and a 4-inch Retina display with a colourful polycarbonate enclosure. Both were announced on 10 September 2013.
A choice of priorities, not simply colours
A fingerprint reader changes an action repeated throughout the day: unlocking and authenticating. Colour and enclosure materials change a different part of ownership, the object you carry and see. Those are separate priorities, and this launch makes that distinction unusually clear. When comparing these phones historically, explain what each was trying to make more appealing rather than treating the 5c as a differently coloured 5s.
Which version is which?
The 5s is the model to look at for the A7 and Touch ID milestone. The 5c is the plastic-backed model in white, blue, pink, green or yellow. Neither should be confused with the earlier iPhone 5, or the later first-generation SE. Match the device’s model number to Apple’s specifications before comparing capacities or prices.
What to check before choosing one
For a surviving 5s, ask for a demonstration of fingerprint recognition if that is central to your interest. For a 5c, inspect the shell and corners closely. For either model, decide whether you want an original-looking collection piece or a working software demonstration: those goals can lead to different choices.
For a used handset, inspect the exact device rather than relying on stock photographs. Ask to see the cameras, charging and controls working. Check storage, battery condition and whether the previous owner has removed their account. Compare any repair quotation with the total purchase price. For daily use, verify the software and services you need on that model before buying.
