iPhone 5 (2012): a taller screen and the Lightning transition

THE IPHONE ARCHIVE · 2012

The iPhone 5 made the display taller without turning the phone into a large-screen device. It also marks an important boundary for accessories, making it a useful landmark in the iPhone archive.

What changed with this iPhone?

Apple introduced a 4-inch Retina display, the A6 chip and LTE connectivity. The Lightning connector replaced the earlier dock connection. Initial availability began on 21 September 2012.

More room does not always mean a wider phone

A taller display gives software more vertical space: a longer message thread, another part of a photograph or more of a web page. The interesting design question is what that extra space does for the task. For a history of phone sizes, the iPhone 5 is a useful example to place between the earlier compact models and the later Plus era. It helps explain that “bigger” can describe several different changes.

Understanding this generation

Keep iPhone 5, 5c and 5s separate when comparing listings. The similar number does not make their internal hardware identical. A photograph of a slim aluminium phone is not sufficient identification, especially if a shell has been replaced. Use the device’s model information and Apple’s specifications, then compare capacity and cosmetic condition within that exact model.

The connector transition is particularly relevant if you have a box of older docks, cables or speakers. Check the actual plug and the function you need: a cable that fits is not evidence that a particular accessory will perform every task. For a historical display, showing the old and new connectors beside the phones makes the change easier to understand than a processor name alone.

For a used device, ask the seller to demonstrate normal operation before payment. Check the exact model, storage, charging port and battery condition, and make sure the device can be set up by its next owner. A clean exterior alone does not establish its condition.
