iPhone 3GS (2009): speed, video and a more capable camera

THE IPHONE ARCHIVE · 2009

The iPhone 3GS kept a familiar outline while making the phone more capable inside. It is an early example of a recurring iPhone pattern: a recognisable design can conceal a meaningful change in everyday use.

What changed with this iPhone?

Apple announced the 3GS with a 3-megapixel autofocus camera, video recording and Voice Control. It launched with iPhone OS 3.0 and was offered in 16 GB and 32 GB configurations. The first countries received it on 19 June 2009.

From taking a picture to recording a moment

A still photo selects a fraction of a second; a video preserves the sequence around it. For a family phone, that changes the kind of memory someone can keep without carrying another device. Autofocus is also a more practical improvement than a megapixel figure alone suggests: the subject and distance can change between shots. Those are useful lenses through which to understand the 3GS announcement, without applying a modern camera score to an early handset.

Understanding this generation

The 3G and 3GS can look very similar in a small marketplace photograph. Identify the model through its markings and the device itself before comparing prices. Also separate launch storage options from later configurations: a capacity in a current identification guide need not have been offered on the first day. The letter S is part of the model name, not an optional description.

Looking at one today

A 3GS can make sense in a timeline of iPhone development, especially beside a 3G. For that purpose, explain the camera and video change in the display rather than presenting two near-identical bodies without context. If the device is intended to run specific old software, ask for a demonstration of that software on the actual unit.

For a used device, ask the seller to demonstrate normal operation before payment. Check the exact model, storage, charging port and battery condition, and make sure the device can be set up by its next owner. A clean exterior alone does not establish its condition.
