iPhone 3G (2008): GPS, faster data and the App Store era

THE IPHONE ARCHIVE · 2008

The iPhone 3G helped turn the first iPhone’s interface into a platform. Its story is about being useful away from a Wi-Fi connection, and about software written by people outside Apple.

What changed with this iPhone?

Apple added 3G cellular networking and built-in GPS. The phone arrived with iPhone 2.0 software and the App Store, alongside Exchange ActiveSync support for work email, contacts and calendars. Initial availability began on 11 July 2008 in 22 countries.

Why apps changed the meaning of a phone

A browser can reach many services, but an application can organise its controls around a single task. That difference is central to this generation. A useful retrospective comparison is to ask what the device enabled other developers to build, rather than to judge it only by its appearance. GPS also made location an input: the phone could help answer “what is near me?” as well as display a place someone had typed.

Understanding this generation

The 3G belongs between the original iPhone and the 3GS. The names are easy to confuse, especially in used listings. Do not read “3G” as a statement that the handset belongs to the third iPhone generation. It describes its mobile-network technology; the 3GS followed as a separate model. Capacity and colour alone are insufficient to identify an old phone reliably.

Looking at one today

This is an archive or collection choice. Before buying one to demonstrate early apps or mapping, ask the seller to show the exact features you want to use. A photograph of a working Home screen proves very little about service compatibility. For a display collection, decide whether original cosmetic condition or a functioning demonstration unit matters more to you.

For a used device, ask the seller to demonstrate normal operation before payment. Check the exact model, storage, charging port and battery condition, and make sure the device can be set up by its next owner. A clean exterior alone does not establish its condition.
