Pixel 9 expanded the conventional Pixel family to three models. The important change is that Pro no longer has to mean the largest body: Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL offer two sizes of the Pro approach alongside the regular Pixel 9.

Choosing camera features before screen size
A smaller Pro changes the decision. Previously, someone wanting a Pro camera package often had to accept the larger phone too. The 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL make size a separate question from the main rear-camera system. That is useful when comparing listings: an XL label is not, by itself, evidence of a different set of rear lenses. Start with the size you can comfortably carry, then consider the photographic features.
Which version is which?
Pixel 9 is the regular model. Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL are the two conventional Pro sizes. Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a separate folding design, while Pixel 9a followed in 2025. Keep all five names distinct when buying accessories or comparing offers; sharing a generation number does not make their bodies interchangeable.
Looking at one today
Try every rear camera, including telephoto on the Pro models, and inspect the camera enclosure for damaged glass. Check the screen at a comfortable reading distance and test unlocking. AI camera features such as Add Me should be judged with attention to software and regional availability. A live demonstration on the actual phone is more useful than assuming a feature from a promotional image.
