Google Pixel model archive · 2020
The original Pixel 4a continued the affordable camera-first idea in a single, compact model. Its simple name needs care: the Pixel 4a (5G), announced later, is a different phone with a different position in the range.

Generation at a glance
- Original Pixel 4a announced in August 2020
- Single rear-camera design
- Camera-focused affordable Pixel branch
- Separate from the later Pixel 4a (5G)
A simpler place in a complicated year
The 4a is useful for understanding Google’s model naming. It followed the 3a idea, but the year also brought a 5G-labelled relative and Pixel 5. As a result, a marketplace heading that says only “Pixel 4a” is not enough to identify every relevant detail. Start with the product name shown in the phone’s settings and the seller’s photographs rather than an automatically generated listing title.
Which version is which?
This guide concerns the original 4a, not the 4a (5G). The two are covered separately in our archive: the 5G version appears alongside Pixel 5 because they were announced together. A case or screen protector described for one version should not be assumed to fit the other. The distinction is physical as well as a network label.
Looking at one today
Look for damage around the screen edges, check the rear fingerprint reader and test charging with a known-good cable. For an older compact phone, the cost and availability of a battery replacement can matter more than a small saving on the purchase price. Read Google’s current repair and support information for the exact model before treating an old bargain as a dependable main phone.
Pixel 5a and earlier no longer receive Android or security updates. Check Google’s current Pixel update schedule for the exact model.
