The fifth-generation pair introduced Samsung’s Flex Hinge and gave Flip5 a much larger outer Flex Window. The range still offered two different answers: a large unfolded workspace or a phone that becomes more compact when closed.

What you can do without opening the phone
An outer screen earns its place when it saves you from opening the device for small, frequent tasks. Flip5’s larger Flex Window is therefore worth trying with your actual notifications, camera use and supported widgets. Fold5 should be assessed differently: its inner display is valuable when it makes reading, comparing or working across apps easier. Neither format is automatically better; the right one depends on the task rather than the amount of screen on the specification sheet.
Which version is which?
Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 were announced together in July 2023. Fold5 supports a compatible S Pen Fold Edition, carried separately or in an appropriate case. Flip5’s cover screen and clamshell mechanism belong to a different design. Accessories should be matched to the fifth generation, even if a case for an older Fold or Flip looks similar online.
Looking at one today
Inspect the hinge and inner-screen edges and test touch across the full panel. Try the cover display before and after opening the phone. Ask about battery and screen repairs and check the warranty for the folding mechanism. A water-resistance rating is not a dust-proof rating, and the condition of a repaired example should be judged individually rather than inferred from a launch claim.
