Megapixels are only the beginning
A high-resolution sensor offers choices about cropping and output detail, but it does not remove the importance of light, motion, focus and processing. For that reason, compare photographs at the sizes you actually view or print them. The Ultra’s pen is another independent reason to choose it. Someone who never writes or sketches on a phone may get more value from a body that is easier to carry, even when the larger camera sounds impressive.
Which version is which?
The main S23 family was announced in February 2023. S23 FE followed later that year as a separate product. Ultra’s built-in pen and camera system distinguish it from S23 and S23+; the FE name also should not be treated as a storage option within those three. Looking at one today
Test close focus, distant subjects and each camera view. On Ultra, try pen strokes near the edges as well as the centre of the screen. Inspect the lens covers and frame for impacts and ask about battery replacement. A refurbished handset’s warranty and actual component condition should be part of the comparison, not an afterthought once the headline price has won your attention.
