iPhone XS, XS Max and XR (2018): three ways into Face ID

IPHONE MODEL ARCHIVE · 2018

The 2018 range expanded the Face ID design into three choices. The important distinction is not just small versus large: the XR took a different display and camera route from the XS pair.

The generation at a glance

Apple announced these models on 12 September 2018. The XS used a 5.8-inch OLED display and the XS Max a 6.5-inch OLED display. The XR used a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina LCD and a single rear camera. All three used A12 Bionic and Face ID.

Start with display and camera needs

A larger screen can be easier to read, but display technology and physical size are separate questions. Likewise, an additional lens is useful only if it offers a view you actually need. This family is best compared by listing the tasks you care about first: reading, carrying the phone, and taking particular kinds of pictures. That prevents the model with the longest name from winning by default.

Which version is which?

XS Max is the larger member of the XS pair. XR is a distinct alternative, not an XS with a different colour. Its single-camera approach and LCD make it important to identify the exact model before comparing prices. In a used listing, ask for the model information rather than relying on the number of letters in the title.

What to check before choosing one

Check Face ID, the full display surface and each available camera. Compare the actual asking prices with condition and any needed repairs. For a historical collection, this trio demonstrates how Apple divided the Face ID design across different sizes and specifications; explain those choices alongside the devices.

For a used handset, inspect the exact device rather than relying on stock photographs. Ask to see the cameras, charging and controls working. Check storage, battery condition and whether the previous owner has removed their account. Compare any repair quotation with the total purchase price. For daily use, verify the software and services you need on that model before buying.
