Google Pixel model archive · 2017
The second Pixel generation pushed computational photography further without adding a second rear lens. Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL share a family identity, but their different screen shapes make them feel more distinct than their names suggest.

Generation at a glance
- 5-inch Pixel 2; 6-inch Pixel 2 XL
- Portrait photography with a single rear camera
- Active Edge squeeze controls
- Android 8 Oreo at launch
A portrait camera without a lens collection
Google combined portrait processing with optical and electronic stabilisation, and introduced Now Playing for recognising nearby music on the device. These features explain the generation better than a simple megapixel comparison. The rear fingerprint reader also remained a straightforward way to unlock the phone. Active Edge offered a physical shortcut to Assistant, so the phone’s sides were part of the interface as well as its shape.
Which version is which?
The smaller Pixel 2 has a more traditional display outline; the 2 XL uses a taller 18:9 panel. Choose by the actual screen and grip, not by an assumption that XL automatically improves every camera feature. An original Pixel XL and a Pixel 2 XL are different generations, despite their very similar listing names.
Looking at one today
Check an OLED screen on both light and dark backgrounds for uneven colour, persistent marks and damaged pixels. Try the rear reader, speakers, buttons and charging port. Google’s original IP67 rating described a new, intact phone; it is not evidence that a repaired or aged example can safely be submerged.
Pixel 5a and earlier no longer receive Android or security updates. Check Google’s current Pixel update schedule for the exact model.
