iPhone 6 and 6 Plus (2014): choosing a larger iPhone

IPHONE MODEL ARCHIVE · 2014

The iPhone 6 generation made size a central decision. The standard phone grew, and the new Plus offered another step up for people who wanted more screen space.

The generation at a glance

Announced on 9 September 2014, the iPhone 6 had a 4.7-inch display and the 6 Plus a 5.5-inch display. Apple introduced the A8 chip and Apple Pay with this generation. Both used aluminium bodies and Touch ID.

The trade-off behind a larger screen

A bigger display can make reading, navigation and photographs more comfortable, but the phone still has to fit a hand and a pocket. That makes the 6 and 6 Plus a good historical comparison: the decision is partly about ergonomics, not just a list of features. Try the physical size before deciding that the larger option must be better. A device used one-handed while travelling serves a different purpose from one used mainly for reading at home.

Which version is which?

The 6 Plus is the larger member of this generation. The later 6s and 6s Plus are separate models, despite their similar outlines. When comparing used examples, establish the exact model first, then compare storage and condition. Model numbers are more reliable than an image of a replacement shell or a loosely written marketplace title.

What to check before choosing one

Inspect the enclosure, screen and Home button on the actual unit. If your interest is historical, the most useful pairing is a 6 beside a 6 Plus: it makes the size choice obvious. If your interest is daily use, demonstrate the required apps before treating an attractive price as good value.

For a used handset, inspect the exact device rather than relying on stock photographs. Ask to see the cameras, charging and controls working. Check storage, battery condition and whether the previous owner has removed their account. Compare any repair quotation with the total purchase price. For daily use, verify the software and services you need on that model before buying.
