iPhone SE (2016): the original compact SE explained

IPHONE MODEL ARCHIVE · 2016

The first iPhone SE took the compact shape seriously at a time when larger phones were becoming more prominent. Its appeal starts with how much phone you want to carry, rather than how much screen you can buy.

The generation at a glance

Announced on 21 March 2016, the original SE combined a 4-inch display with the A9 chip. Its 12 MP rear camera supported Live Photos and 4K video. Touch ID and Apple Pay were part of the package.

Compact can be a deliberate preference

A smaller display leaves less room for reading and editing, but the object may be easier to carry and handle. Neither preference is universal. The original SE is useful in a model history because it shows that a smaller phone need not simply be the previous flagship left on sale. When considering one today, begin with the intended purpose: a design collection, a software demonstration and a daily phone are different purchases.

Which version is which?

This is the first-generation SE, from 2016. It is distinct from the larger-bodied SE models introduced in 2020 and 2022. A listing that says only “iPhone SE” is incomplete for comparison purposes. Confirm the generation before comparing storage, accessories or condition. Its shape can also be confused with a 5s, so consult the model information.

What to check before choosing one

For a collection, pay attention to the enclosure, markings and matching packaging rather than assuming every compact aluminium iPhone is an SE. If the goal is functional use, ask for the specific apps you need to be demonstrated. A small body is a reason to prefer a design, not evidence that the device meets present-day software requirements.

For a used handset, inspect the exact device rather than relying on stock photographs. Ask to see the cameras, charging and controls working. Check storage, battery condition and whether the previous owner has removed their account. Compare any repair quotation with the total purchase price. For daily use, verify the software and services you need on that model before buying.
