iPhone 7 and 7 Plus (2016): cameras, audio and the Plus difference

IPHONE MODEL ARCHIVE · 2016

The iPhone 7 family made the distinction between the standard and Plus model more than a matter of screen size. It also changed how people connected headphones.

The generation at a glance

Apple announced both models on 7 September 2016 with the A10 Fusion chip, stereo speakers and IP67 water and dust resistance when new. The 7 Plus added a dual-camera system. The traditional 3.5 mm headphone socket was removed.

Choose the photograph, then the camera

An additional camera is useful when it changes the photograph you can take from where you are standing. That is a more practical comparison than counting lenses. If most pictures are quick snapshots, a more elaborate system may matter less than convenience. Audio deserves a similarly practical check: think about the headphones, car connection and charging habits you actually use before deciding whether the change is significant.

Which version is which?

The standard iPhone 7 and larger 7 Plus share a generation, but the Plus has the dual-camera story. Treat camera features and physical size as two separate decisions. Do not assume a Plus feature is available on the smaller model merely because both are called iPhone 7. Verify the exact model and storage in the phone’s information.

What to check before choosing one

Test the speakers, charging connection and Home button. On a Plus, check the cameras in more than one shooting situation. Do not treat an original water-resistance rating as a guarantee for an aged or repaired handset; its present condition matters. A seller’s demonstration of the actual device is more useful than the original advertising.

For a used handset, inspect the exact device rather than relying on stock photographs. Ask to see the cameras, charging and controls working. Check storage, battery condition and whether the previous owner has removed their account. Compare any repair quotation with the total purchase price. For daily use, verify the software and services you need on that model before buying.
