iPhone 17 family (2025): standard, Pro and Pro Max compared

IPHONE MODEL ARCHIVE · 2025

The iPhone 17 family makes it worth looking closely at the standard model before assuming a Pro is necessary. The Air is a separate design choice and has its own guide.

The generation at a glance

Apple announced the 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max on 9 September 2025. The standard 17 introduced a ProMotion display and A19, alongside a 48 MP Dual Fusion camera system. The Pro pair offered their own three-camera systems and 6.3-inch or 6.9-inch displays.

The standard model deserves a task-based comparison

When a feature moves into a standard phone, the reason to buy a higher model must become more specific. List the photographs, video work or other tasks that justify the difference to you. A feature you admire in an announcement is not necessarily one you will use. For many comparisons, holding the device and reviewing real sample files provides more clarity than a long list of superlatives.

Which version is which?

The standard 17, Pro and Pro Max are three distinct choices. Pro Max is the larger Pro option. Air prioritises a different physical design, while 17e arrived later as another separate model. Avoid combining specifications from those branches into an imaginary “iPhone 17” that has every feature mentioned anywhere in the range.

What to check before choosing one

Try the display and camera features on the exact model you are considering. Check capacity, SIM requirements and warranty for the region in which you will use it. If a particular AI or connected feature is essential, confirm present availability with Apple rather than relying on a general family description or an older launch promise.

For a used handset, inspect the exact device rather than relying on stock photographs. Ask to see the cameras, charging and controls working. Check storage, battery condition and whether the previous owner has removed their account. Compare any repair quotation with the total purchase price. For daily use, verify the software and services you need on that model before buying.
