iPhone 15 family (2023): USB-C, Dynamic Island and the Pro choices

IPHONE MODEL ARCHIVE · 2023

The iPhone 15 generation is an important connector milestone. It also brought Dynamic Island to the standard branch, so comparing models requires more than looking at the top of the screen.

The generation at a glance

Apple announced the family on 12 September 2023. The 15 and Plus used A16 Bionic, Dynamic Island, a 48 MP Main camera and USB-C. The Pro pair used A17 Pro, titanium frames and an Action button. USB-C was part of both branches.

A matching plug is only the beginning

A shared connector can simplify the cables in a bag, but it does not make every cable, accessory or transfer task equivalent. Think about what you actually connect: a charger, computer, display or storage device. Then check the specification for that task on the exact model. This practical approach is more useful than treating the arrival of USB-C as proof that every connection behaves identically.

Which version is which?

The 15 and 15 Pro are the smaller options in their respective branches; Plus and Pro Max are larger. The Pro Max has its own camera specifications, so a camera-led comparison should go beyond the shared Pro name. Use Apple’s model-specific pages before assuming a feature applies to both Pro sizes.

What to check before choosing one

Inspect the USB-C port and demonstrate charging and any data-transfer workflow you need. For photographers, compare sample images at the focal lengths you use. For a used purchase, include storage and battery condition in the comparison: a higher original position in the range does not automatically make a worn handset the better choice.

For a used handset, inspect the exact device rather than relying on stock photographs. Ask to see the cameras, charging and controls working. Check storage, battery condition and whether the previous owner has removed their account. Compare any repair quotation with the total purchase price. For daily use, verify the software and services you need on that model before buying.
