iPhone 12 family (2020): mini, standard, Pro and Pro Max explained

IPHONE MODEL ARCHIVE · 2020

The iPhone 12 generation offered four distinct sizes and positions in the range. The compact mini is a particularly useful reminder that a smaller body can be a deliberate preference.

The generation at a glance

Apple introduced the family on 13 October 2020 with 5G and A14 Bionic. Screen sizes were 5.4 inches for mini, 6.1 for 12 and 12 Pro, and 6.7 for Pro Max. The Pro pair added a Telephoto camera and LiDAR scanner to the Wide and Ultra Wide arrangement.

Separate size from camera ambition

There are two decisions here, and combining them too early makes comparison harder. First choose the physical size that suits your reading and carrying habits. Then ask whether the extra camera options serve a real task. A small phone can be the right tool for frequent one-handed use; a large one can be preferable for viewing and editing. Neither decision is settled by a processor shared across the family.

Which version is which?

The mini is the compact version, and the standard 12 offers a larger display without the Pro camera arrangement. The 12 Pro shares the standard model’s nominal display size, while Pro Max is larger. Do not assume that all camera details are identical between the Pro sizes: consult the specifications for the exact model before a camera-led purchase.

What to check before choosing one

Test the screen, Face ID and every available camera. If the mini is the attraction, try typing at your preferred text size before buying. For a used Pro, check whether the extra features justify the difference in total cost after any battery or screen work. Compare actual condition, not only original launch position.

For a used handset, inspect the exact device rather than relying on stock photographs. Ask to see the cameras, charging and controls working. Check storage, battery condition and whether the previous owner has removed their account. Compare any repair quotation with the total purchase price. For daily use, verify the software and services you need on that model before buying.
